Note ·

Weight tolerance is a commercial term, not a technical one

Two mills can both meet the standard and still hand you a different invoice. The gap lives in the tolerance band.

A rebar standard gives a nominal mass per metre and a tolerance around it. Both are technical. What happens inside that band is commercial.

Where the money sits

Order by piece, pay by weight, and the tolerance decides the difference.

  • On the light side of the band, the buyer gets fewer kilos than the drawing assumed.
  • On the heavy side, the buyer pays for steel the structure does not need.

Neither case is a defect. Both are inside the standard.

What to put in the contract

State the tolerance you expect, state how weight is verified, and state who witnesses it.
