Frequently asked questions

How do I use it?

Pick a section type from the home grid, choose the standard size from the dropdown, and enter a length in metres — the weight updates live as you type.

Does the app need an internet connection?

No. It works fully offline, even in Airplane Mode. Every section's dimensions are bundled inside the app, and the weight is computed on your device.

How accurate are the weights?

Weight is always computed from each section's standard nominal geometry (height, width, thicknesses) using the same cross-section formulas mill handbooks use — not a hardcoded number. That said, the bundled dimensions themselves are seeded from general engineering knowledge of EN 10365 / EN 10056 and have not yet been checked against an official reference table, which is why every result carries a notice to that effect. Verify before relying on a figure for a real quote or purchase. See the privacy policy for more on this and docs/DESIGN.md in the source repo for the exact formulas.

Is it really free and open source?

Yes — MIT licensed, no ads, no in-app purchases, no login. The full source is at github.com/UKDean/SteelCalc; contributions (more sizes, more languages, verified data) are welcome.

The size I need isn't listed

The current release covers a common range per family, not the full standard table. Open a GitHub issue with the designation you need, or add it yourself — see the Contributing section of the README.

Can I switch between metric and imperial units?

Yes, from the Settings screen. The underlying data and math always stay metric/EN 10365; the imperial option only changes how dimensions and weight are displayed.

Does the app collect my data?

No. See the Privacy Policy.
